 É frequentemente ignorado que, ao entender a percepção como origem da maioria, se não de todos os conceitos, pensamentos e eventos mentais, E.T.A. Hoffmann é muito mais moderno do que normalmente supõe. De fato, neste aspecto, ele está próximo algumas ideias Peirce Wittgenstein.
